India will soon have the second largest metro network in the world: Union Minister Manohar Lal

Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal has said, India will soon have the second largest metro network in the world. Addressing the valedictory Ceremony of 17th Urban Mobility India conference at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, the minister stressed on the sustainable and equitable public transport. Mr Manohar Lal said, the government has undertaken tremendous strides to ensure sustainable and integrated urban transport. He said, during the last ten years, more than 725 kilometers has been operationalised in the country and another 974 kilometers of Metro network is under construction.

 

Mr Manohar Lal also highlighted the use of technology, innovation, green solutions and Public Private Partnerships to ensure sustainable, accessible and inclusive public transport and to make our cities livable.

 

During the programme, the awards of “Best Practices Project in Urban Transport” were presented to state and city authorities in 9 different categories. Most sustainable transport system award was given to Kochi Metro Rail Corporation, while Bhubaneswar received the award for the best public transport and the Surat city received the award for the best intelligent transport system.

       

The three day conference discussed various nuances of Urban mobility mainly the standardisation of various urban transport solutions and integration of various modes of urban mobility.
