India to host side events in partnership with UN at COP 29

India will host side events in partnership with the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral organizations at the ongoing Climate Change Conference – COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The side events will be hosted in the respective pavilions, ensuring high-level participation and wider outreach. Sources in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said India also has an office with thematic installations.

Highlighting India’s ambitions, the sources said that COP 29 must uphold the principles and provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement to prevent the imposition of undue obligations on developing nations. It added that COP 29 should ensure that climate finance is adequate, predictable, accessible, grant-based, low-interest, and long-term.

On energy transition, the sources mentioned that COP 29 should ensure that it is just and achieved in a nationally determined manner. They added that COP 29 should be able to agree to a mechanism that uses market-based instruments to incentivize low-carbon development. Furthermore, the parties should establish clearer rules for global carbon markets that do not create unfair barriers to trade or development but instead address the technology and financing gaps for supporting developing nations. COP 29 will be held until the 22nd of this month.
