Sri Lanka, keen to harness its renewable energy potential, eyes significant investments in the sector from India. Speaking at a business event in Colombo yesterday, attended by an Indian delegation from renewable energy sector, Sri Lanka’s Minister for Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekara elaborated on vast potential in renewable energy in Sri Lanka and invited Indian companies to invest in the sector. Both sides agreed to explore avenues for greater collaboration & innovation, drawing synergies with India’s renewable energy growth story.
Further, Ceylon Electricity Board’s General Manager, Dr. Narendra De Silva mentioned investment opportunities exceeding $10 billion in the coming years in the island. The event organized with the assistance of India’s Ministry of New & Renewable Energy & Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), brought together Renewable Energy Sector developers, investors, officials & stakeholders from both countries. Further, a delegation led by Secretary to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, discussed possible investments and engaged with Mr. Wijesekara, and renewable energy stakeholders & officials of Sri Lanka. Renewable energy cooperation between the two countries, capacity building programs, technology transfer, investments, opportunities and policies related to the sector were also discussed during the meeting.
The collaboration between India and Sri Lanka in the energy sector includes plans for grid connectivity in addition to Noteworthy projects like the Indian power initiatives in Sampur, the three northern islands, and wind projects in Pooneryn and Mannar.
