India successfully met a peak power demand of 250 gigawatts in May this year. Speaking to the media after a one-day conference of Power Ministers from states and Union Territories, Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal said that the country achieved this demand with 200 gigawatts from fossil fuels and 50 gigawatts from renewable energy sources.
The minister informed that the financial viability of power distribution companies (discoms) was also discussed during the meeting. Mr. Lal highlighted that the gap between the Average Revenue Requirement (ARR) and Average Cost of Supply (ACS) has been continuously improving. He mentioned that in the financial year 2022-23, the gap was 45 paise per unit, while in FY 2023-24, it stands at 21 paise.
