India Lights Up India Gate to Mark World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day 2025

As the globe is observing World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day today, the country’s iconic India Gate has been illuminated in vibrant hues of purple and orange.

This symbolic act is part of a global movement to light up iconic landmarks across the world to raise awareness about Neglected Tropical Diseases. It also emphasizes the importance of collective action to combat these debilitating diseases.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to highlight India’s progress in the fight against NTDs, with a special focus on Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) and Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL).

Lymphatic Filariasis is a disease that threatens 404 million people in India. This disease can damage the lymphatic system and can lead to the abnormal enlargement of body parts, causing pain, and severe disability. Visceral Leishmaniasis or Kala-Azar can cause severe debility, malnutrition and loss of ability to work.
