Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying George Kurian said a special net that excludes sea turtles has been developed by the country’s fisheries research institutes, and its effectiveness will be demonstrated soon. Addressing media persons in Kochi on Saturday, he said the country exports prawns worth 40,000 crore rupees to the US, of which 90 per cent are aquaculture prawns. The remaining ten per cent are wild catch from the sea. The Minister’s remarks came in the backdrop of the US ban on Indian shrimp, owing to concerns of unregulated fishing practices that had led to incidental capture and injury of marine turtles in trawl nets.
