Govt will not tolerate irregularities in agriculture sector: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today assured strict action against corruption, stating that the government will not tolerate irregularities. His remarks came during question hour in the Lok Sabha amid allegations of corruption amounting to ₹5,000 crore in Maharashtra’s agriculture department, as alleged by NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule. Sule cited statements made by a Maharashtra minister and an MLA about the alleged scam.

“This is the first time I have heard about it. I am not aware of the actual situation. However, if any irregularities are found, an inquiry will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against those guilty,” Chouhan said during a discussion in the Lok Sabha.

In response to another question, Chouhan highlighted the progress of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a centrally-sponsored crop insurance scheme. He stated that 23 states and union territories have adopted the PMFBY, while others continue with their schemes.

“It is the largest crop insurance scheme in the world. We have explained its benefits to the remaining states and requested them to implement it,” Chouhan said. The PMFBY provides comprehensive risk coverage for farmers’ crops from pre-sowing to post-harvest stages, protecting them from non-preventable natural risks.

Addressing another question, the minister emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to increasing farmers’ incomes. He pointed out India’s global leadership in coconut production, with an increase from 140 lakh metric tonnes to 153 lakh metric tonnes in a short period.

Chouhan concluded by reiterating the government’s dedication to strengthening the agriculture sector and ensuring the welfare of farmers through various initiatives.
