IMD issues Red alert for three districts of coastal Karnataka predicting heavy rainfall; Orange alert issued for 12 districts of Kerala

India Meteorological Department (IMD) a red alert for three districts of coastal Karnataka predicting extremely heavy rainfall today, July 5. These districts are Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada. The weather department has also advised the fishermen to avoid going into the Arabian Sea. The IMD said that stormy weather with wind speeds gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over the Karnataka coast.
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for several districts of Karnataka, including Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Raichur, Bengaluru Rural, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Mysuru, and Tumkuru districts.  A yellow alert has been issued for Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts.

Although many places in Kerala received heavy rains during the night, there has been some respite this morning. Intermittent rains, however, continue in several areas. The IMD has declared an orange alert in 12 districts in the state, indicating the possibility of very heavy rain.

Damage to houses, uprooting of trees, snapping of powerlines, damage to roads, widespread losses to agricultural crops, etc. have been reported from different places in the state. Sea erosion was reported in several coastal areas including Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kasargod. The water level in many rivers is on the rise, especially in Periyar, Pampa, Achankoil, Muvattupuzha, Manimalyar, Meenachil, and Uppala. Water entered the Shiva temple, situated on the banks of the Periyar river in Ernakulam district. Many low-lying areas in Alappuzha district were inundated following heavy rains in the hilly regions of the state.
