Hurricane Helene Claims 116 Lives in US

In the USA, at least 116 people have died nationwide since Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida. Officials in North Carolina said that 30 people had died in Buncombe County alone as of Sunday evening.

Local media reported that 2.7 million people were without power, and thousands were stranded across the southeastern US due to flooding from Hurricane Helene. In North Carolina, the storm triggered the worst flooding in a century. Governor Roy Cooper said nearly 300 roads remained closed, and several bridges were washed away by the flooding. The storm hit the Florida coast on Thursday, bringing winds of up to 225 kilometres per hour. It then moved through Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee before dissipating over Kentucky on Saturday.
