Home Minister Amit Shah reiterates, no provision in CAA to snatch away anyone’s citizenship

Union Home Minister and BJP Senior leader Amit Shah has said the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will give citizenship to refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh but there is no provision in the act to snatch away anyone’s citizenship. Mr Shah was addressing party’s Social Media volunteers and chairmen of the party booth level committees, at different events at Hyderabad in Telangana on Tuesday afternoon.

The Citizenship Amendment Act makes minorities belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian communities facing persecution on religious grounds in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for Indian citizenship. CAA had received the assent of the President on 12th December, 2019.

Yesterday, the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 under the CAA-2019 were notified. The Government has launched a new portal for persons who are eligible for Indian citizenship under Citizenship Amendment Act-2019. People who want to apply can log on to indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in.
