In hockey, the Indian Junior Men’s team kicked off their Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 campaign with a commanding 4-2 victory over Japan at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Malaysia yesterday. India’s Amir Ali opened the scoreboard in the 12th minute, with a fine field goal. 14 minutes later, Japan scored the equalizer through Tsubasa Tanaka’s strike. However, the Blue Colts regained control, with Gurjot Singh scoring in the 36th minute, followed by quick goals from Anand Sourabh Kushwaha in the 44th and Ankit Pal in the 47th minutes. Rakusei Yamanaka scored the second goal for Japan.
The match also marked a significant milestone for Olympian PR Sreejesh, who embarked on a new chapter in his hockey career, making a successful debut as coach of the Indian junior men’s team.
The Indian team will next take on Great Britain this afternoon. The match will start at 1.35 PM, IST. In their first match, Great Britain defeated Australia, 3-1, yesterday.
The Sultan of Johor Cup was founded in 2011, India and Great Britain became the first teams to win the title thrice.
