Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that economic activity in the country has been good across sectors and all segments are growing significantly. Replying to a short duration discussion on the economic situation in the country in the Rajya Sabha today, Ms Sitharaman said, India is the second most sought-after manufacturing destination in the world. She also listed India’s achievements across industries during her response at the discussion which started on Tuesday.

The Finance Minister said, direct tax collection grew 21.82 per cent this year and monthly Goods and Services Tax collections stabilized at 1.6 lakh crore rupees, as a sign of economic growth. She said, July to September GDP was high and India continuously maintained the momentum of being the fastest growing major economy.

The Minister said, in just the last eight years, India has become the world's fifth largest economy. Ms Sitharaman informed that because of the Make In India programme and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's production-linked incentive schemes, the manufacturing sector is also now significantly contributing to the economy.

She said, unemployment rate has declined to 10 per cent from 17.8 per cent in 2017-18. The Minister said, the Government has taken several steps to check inflation.

The Upper house today resumed the short-duration discussion on the economic situation in the country. Naresh Bansal, Dr Ashok Bajpai and Ram Chandra Jangra of BJP, V Shivadasan of CPI(M), L Hanumanthaiah of Congress and  M Shanmugam of DMK participated in the discussion among others.

The Lok Sabha today passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023 by voice vote. The Bill amends the Central Universities Act, 2009, which establishes central universities for teaching and research in various states. The Bill seeks to establish a Central Tribal University in Telangana which will be named as  ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’. It will provide avenues of higher education and research facilities primarily for the tribal population of India.

Replying to a debate on the bill in the House, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the 'Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University' will be constructed at an expenditure of around 900 crore rupees.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to release in advance the central share of the second installment of State Disaster Response Fund  of nearly 500 crore rupees to Andhra Pradesh and 450 crore rupees to Tamil Nadu to help the state governments with the management of relief necessitated by the Severe cyclonic storm Michaung. The Center has already released the first installment of the same amount to both the States.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducts aerial survey of flood-affected areas of Tamil Nadu followed by a meeting with Chief Minister M.K.Stalin in Chennai today. In an interaction with the media, he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally distressed at the loss of lives due to Cyclone Michaung. He said that the Prime Minister was personally overseeing the response to the present crisis and had also spoken to the Chief Minister. He assured that a central team is likely to visit Chennai to assess the damages.

The Defence Minister said the Prime Minister had asked the Ministry of Home affairs and the Cabinet Secretary to deploy all resources, human and material, for assisting the people of Tamilnadu. He appreciated the appropriate response taken by the Army, Navy, Airforce, Coast Guard, Met Department, NDRF and all central agencies who helped in tiding over the current crisis. He assured the people of Tamilnadu that the Government of India is committed to their well being, a commitment which is reflected in the attention paid by the Central Government during this disaster.

Since the problem of floods has been repeatedly witnessed by Chennai, the Government of India has approved a central funding of 500 crore rupees for urban flood management activity under Chennai Basin. Thanking Prime Minister Modi for the immediate release of the fund, Tamilnadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin said that steps were taken on a  war footing to restore normalcy and speed up rescue and relief work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Uttarakhand Global Investors Summit 2023 at the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun tomorrow. The two-day summit is being organized on the theme of peace to prosperity. The summit will be attended by thousands of investors and delegates from across the world. It will witness the participation of Union Ministers, Ambassadors of various countries along with leading industrialists, among others. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that all preparations have been made for the summit.

In a social media post, the Prime Minister said that the Armed Forces' dedication to protecting the nation is unparalleled. He also urged all to make contributions to the Armed Forces Flag Day fund.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur paid his regards to all the brave armed forces on the occasion of Armed Forces Flag Day. In a social media post, Mr. Thakur appealed to countrymen to come forward and contribute to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund to recognize their selfless service and do our bit for the welfare of their families.

In Mizoram, all arrangements are in place for the swearing-in of Zoram People’s Movement leader Lalduhoma as the next Chief Minister of the hill state tomorrow. Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati will administer oath to Chief Minister-designate Lalduhoma. Sources informed that other ministers are also likely to take oath of office and secrecy along with the Chief Minister. The “Swearing-in Ceremony” will be held at Raj Bhawan in the heart of Aizawl city at 11 AM. An alternate arrangement is also being put in place at Assembly House Annexe in case the weather plays spoil sport. More from our correspondent:

A former IPS officer and the man who once manned the security aspects of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Lalduhoma is the man that Mizoram awaits. Starting his political career in the early 80’s, Lalduhoma, who became Lok Sabha MP in 1984, has walked through many ups and downs for almost 40 years in the political corridor. The new Chief Minister will be announcing the first 100 days program of the new “Kalphung Thar” Government after the Swearing-in Cermony” - Gin Gangte, Akashvani News, Aizawl.

Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra (VBSY) is continuing its inspiring journey throughout the country. The Yatra was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 15th of last month. During the last three weeks, the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra has been organised at a large number of villages and tribal areas across the country. The Yatra aims at informing and empowering citizens about the flagship schemes of the government, and is receiving huge public response. Along with the rest of the country, the VBSY is being organised in Tripura.   More from our Agartala correspondent:


In the state, the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra has so far been organised in over 90 Panchayats with 16 IEC Vans in force. According to the officials, this is a major initiative to saturate the benefits of central government schemes to the public at the grassroots. For this purpose, the campaign adopted IEC activities through screening of visuals on welfare schemes from mobile Vans and on-the-spot service delivery camps in venues. 

Marginalized people left-out of any benefits of development schemes are thronging these camps to enrol afresh and are getting sanction letters of benefits under schemes like PM Ujjawala Yojana, Ayushman Bharat Card, PM Jan Dhan Yojana, Jaal Jeevan Mission, among others.

Many beneficiaries also participated in the VBSY camps to get engaged with the development process. Smt Bhavani Chakraborty, a beneficiary from Chandipur in Kailashahar in Unakoti district said she is happy that her children got a safe and secure pucca house under PM Awas Yojana.

In Ladakh, the IEC Van for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra reached Panchayat Halqas of Sabjak in Shakar Chiktan Block and in Sangrah and Nagma Kausar Panchayats in Block Sankoo of Kargil District. As part of the Yatra, the officers from different line department interacted and reached out to the citizens eligible under various welfare schemes, disseminating information and fostering awareness about the Government sponsored public centric schemes. .

In Tamilnadu, the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra was held at various places in coordination with the Central Government agencies and Nehru Yuva Kendra and also voluntary organisations. The events highlighted the various schemes of the Central Government like Sukanya Samridhi, Prime Minister's LPG scheme, use of drone technology in agriculture and farmers insurance schemes. The officers of Krishi Vigyan Kendra encouraged the farmers to get the benefits from Kisan Credit Card and Soil health card.

The Health Ministry has rejected media reports claiming detection of bacterial cases in AIIMS Delhi linked to the recent surge in pneumonia cases in China. The ministry has termed the reports as misleading.

The Key domestic indices ended in the red amid negative cues from the global share markets.  A report from the business desk- 

"The Sensex lost 132 points to close at 69,522. The Nifty fell 37 points to end at 20,901.In the forex market, Indian rupee closed at 83 rupees and 36 paise against the US dollar.

Gold prices, at Multi Commodity Exchange for February contracts, were trading at 62,550 rupees per 10 gram. Silver prices were trading at 74,730 rupees per kilogram for March Contracts when reports last came in.
