Heavy rains batter many places in Kerala; Met Department issues red alert in Idukki, Kannur

Heavy rains battered many places in Kerala causing damage to a few houses, uprooting of trees and leaving some low-lying areas flooded. Traffic was disrupted at some places due to the uprooting of trees and efforts are on to clear the roads.

No loss of life has been reported so far.

The state is on a high alert with weathermen predicting the possibility of heavy rains in the state in the days ahead. The weather department has issued red alert in the districts of Idukki and Kannur, while an Orange alert is in place in all the remaining 12 districts.

Reports said a tribal hamlet where over 250 families are staying at Kurumbanmoozhi in Pathanamthitta district has been cut off after trees were uprooted and fell on a causeway connecting the village. Fireforce personnel and local people are engaged in clearing the causeway.

Meanwhile, the state Revenue Minister K  Rajan has convened a high-level meeting in Thiruvananthapuram this evening to take stock of the situation.
