In Guatemala, at least 55 people have died after a bus plunged into a gorge and landed under a bridge yesterday on the outskirts of Guatemala’s capital.

According to media reports, 53 bodies were recovered at the scene, and two additional passengers who were taken to the hospital later succumbed to their injuries. A multi-vehicle crash sent the bus off the road and into the steep gorge below the bridge before dawn. Others were seriously injured. The bus fell 115 feet into a sewage-polluted stream. The bus had come from Progreso, northeast of the capital. President Bernardo Arévalo has offered his condolences.
