The government today said three women Judges are working in the Supreme Court, 106 women Judges are working in the High Courts and seven thousand 199 women Judges are working in the District and Subordinate Courts. This information was given by Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in the Rajya Sabha. In a written reply, he said the government has a limited role in fixing a particular percentage of women judges in the judiciary. He added that in case of appointment of Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, the Constitution does not provide for reservation for any caste or class of persons.
Mr Meghwal said the government is committed to social diversity in the appointment of Judges including women, so that decision-making process becomes more responsive, inclusive, and participatory at all levels. He said the government has been requesting the Chief Justices of High Courts that while sending proposals for appointment of Judges, due consideration be given to suitable candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minorities, and Women to ensure social diversity in appointment of Judges in higher judiciary.
