Govt drafts Bill for establishment of Higher Education Commission of India

The Government is drafting a Bill for establishment of the Higher Education Commission of India. For transforming the Regulatory System of Higher Education, the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 envisions setting up of an umbrella institution, the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI).

In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Subhash Sarkar said that The NEP, 2020 further envisions that the first regulator of HECI will be the National Higher Education Regulatory Council (NHERC). It will function as the common, single point regulator for the higher education sector including teacher education and excluding medical and legal education, thus eliminating the duplication and disjunction of regulatory efforts by the multiple regulatory agencies that exist at the current time.
