Government has informed that food wastage in storage and transit loss has been significantly reduced in the last 10 years. Replying to a supplementary question in Lok Sabha, Minister of consumer affairs, Food and Public distribution Prahlad Joshi said, Wastage of rice has decreased from 0.39 percent in 2013 to 0.07 percent as of now. He also informed that, transit loss of wheat has decreased to 0.14 percent from 0.35 percent and transit loss of rice has decreased to 0.19 percent from 0.58 percent as of now.
Mr. Joshi said, Covered storage capacity of Food Corporation of India and State agencies for storage of central pool foodgrain stock is more than 837 lakh metric tonnes against stored stock of 604 Lakh metric tonnes.
