Government 200 projects worth around 715 crore rupees carry out in Shimla under Smart Cities Mission

The Government has undertaken a number of initiatives in Shimla under the Smart Cities Mission to make the hill station more sustainable and citizen-friendly. The capital of Himachal Pradesh was chosen under the Smart Cities Mission in the third round in June 2017. Over 200 projects worth around 715 crore rupees are being carried out in this tourist otspot with an aim to provide core infrastructure and ease of living to the citizens with the application of Smart solutions.

Akashvani correspondent report: Shimla has had a long tradition of walking since colonial times. Local people and tourists can be seen walking around the city,  taking in the sights and enjoying the pleasant weather.  In order to make walking safe and smooth, especially for the elderly and school children,  a network of pedestrian paths has been constructed along various roads. These pedestrian paths also lend an aesthetic appeal to the city. A subway,  the first of its kind in Shimla,  has been constructed on a Circular road so that children of two schools – Portmore School and St Edward School – have no problem crossing the road which sees intense vehicular traffic.

Eight Smart bus stops are being developed under Shimla Smart City at various locations. These Smart bus stops are one of a kind and have unique features like solar panels on the roof and security cameras. Spiti Valley and Kinnaur district are connected to Shimla through Sanjauli-Dhalli single-lane traffic tunnel which was constructed in the 19th century. Shimla Smart City is constructing an additional double-lane tunnel almost parallel to the existing one so that people travelling to Kufri, Naldehra, Narkanda and Chail can do so without facing heavy traffic. Work is underway in full swing under Shimla Smart City to make this beautiful city sustainable, healthy, livable and vibrant.
