Former Congressman Matt Gaetz withdraws from consideration for US Attorney General nomination

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for US Attorney General. In a social media post, the 42-year-old stated that controversy over his potential nomination was becoming an unfair distraction to the work of the incoming Trump administration.

Mr Gaetz’s withdrawal follows opposition from Senate Republicans, whose support he needed to win the job of Attorney General. Mr Gaetz’s nomination had run into controversy from the moment after the announcement over allegations that he had sex with a minor, which had been investigated by the ethics committee of the US House of Representatives.

Mr Gaetz, a former member of the House of Representatives from Florida, had resigned his seat just days before the ethics committee’s report was expected. The resignation was said to be a move to prevent its release of the report under a tradition that prevents the body from investigating people who are not members of the House. However, there have been exceptions to that protocol.
