Flood alert for 7 districts of West Bengal; People in districts of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Jalpaiguri evacuated to safer places

In West Bengal, there is already a flood alert for seven districts. As a precautionary measure, people in the districts of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Jalpaiguri have been evacuated to safer places. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, all steps have been taken to evacuate people in the districts of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Jalpaiguri to safer places. Senior Ministers of the State and senior IAS officers have rushed to North Bengal to oversee rescue and relief operations. Close vigil is being kept to ensure that there is no loss of life in this calamity. Kolkata received incessant rains since yesterday night, leaving the streets inundated and slowing down the traffic.

Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia and Purba Bardhaman districts of West Bengal are also reeling under a flood-like situation after the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) reportedly released 90,000 cusecs of water from Maithon and Panchet dams. On Monday, nearly one lakh cusecs of water were released from the two dams. With the change in weather patterns, more water may have to be released in the coming hours in a calibrated manner, as per the DVC sources.
