In Bangladesh, thousands of people looted fish worth around Taka 4 crore from water bodies, or ‘Beels’, in Sunamganj district. The looting began last Friday when 500-700 people forcibly took fish from Kaman-Kachma Beel. The next day, 8,000-10,000 people arrived in vehicles to continue the looting. Local leaseholders claim fish were stolen from at least eight Beels. The dispute over Beel leases and lax law enforcement allowed the mass theft to occur, despite police presence. Police are investigating the incident.
