Celebrated Malayalam writer and film maker MT Vasudevan Nair, often referred to as MT, passed away at a private hospital in Kozhikode last night. He was 91. MT was ailing for some time and was hospitalized since the 15 th of this month.
A prolific and versatile story teller, MT’s literary and cinematic works had a profound impact on Malayalam literature and cinema. His major works include Nalukettu, Kaalam, Manju, Asuravithu and Randamoozham. His works have been translated into various languages. Besides being the producer and director of a few films, MT penned several critically acclaimed screenplays — Nirmalyam, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, Parinayam, Sadayam, and Kadavu among others.
A recepient of Jnanapith in 2005, MT was awarded the Padma Bhushan, Kerala Jyothy, Kendra Sahitya Akademi and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi awards. Besides, he was also the recepient of Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Odakkuzhal Award and the JC Daniel Award for Lifetime Achievement in Malayalam Cinema.
Kerala government has declared State mourning today and tomorrow. All government functions scheduled to be held today have been deferred.
