The domestic benchmark indices today climbed around 0.9 percent led by rally in metal and bank stocks. The 30-share Sensex advanced 694 points to 79,477, while the Nifty 50 added 218 points to 24,213.
The broader market at Bombay Stock Exchange also ended in positive territory. The Mid-Cap and the Small-Cap indices gained over 0.4 percent each.
In the Sensex index, 21 out of 30 companies logged gains. In the top gainers, JSW Steel surged over four and half percent, Tata Steel gained more than three and half percent and Axis Bank added over two and half percent. Conversely, in the laggards, Adani Ports dropped nearly one and half percent, ITC and Asian Paints, both slipped over 0.9 percent each, and Bharti Airtel lost 0.8 percent.
In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 15 out of 20 sectors ended with gains. In the top gainers, Metal gained over 2.3 percent, Bankex added over two percent, and Commodities advanced over 1.8 percent. Meanwhile, in the laggards, Services dropped 0.19 percent, Teck and FMCG, both slipped 0.17 percent each, and Focused IT as well as Information Technology were marginally down 0.05 percent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,468 companies advanced and 1,478 declined while 112 remain unchanged.
At the National Stock Exchange, 77 companies hit their 23 week high while 22 hit their 52 week low.
