The domestic benchmark indices today extended gains for second straight session, recovering from losses secured in the intraday trade. The BSE Sensex climbed 364 points, or 0.45 percent, to close at 80,369, while the NSE Nifty advanced 128 points, or 0.52 percent, to settle at 24,467. The broader market at Bombay Stock Exchange ended in positive territory. The Mid-Cap index and the Small-Cap index, both rose over 0.7 percent.
In the Sensex index, 16 out of 30 companies ended in positive territory. In the top gainers, SBI Bank climbed more than five percent, ICICI Bank gained over three percent and Bajaj Financial Services added more than two percent. Conversely, in the laggards, Maruti shed 4.1 percent, Tata Motors lost over four percent, and Sun Pharma and Bharti Airtel, both fell over 1.6 percent. In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 14 out of 20 sectors logged gains. In the top gainers, Bankex added 2.2 percent, Financial Services increased two percent and Realty gained nearly one and half percent. In the top laggards, Auto declined over one and half percent, Teck slipped over 0.8 percent, and Telecommunication fell 0.7 percent. The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive as shares of 2,242 companies advanced and 1,623 declined while 126 remain unchanged.
At the National Stock Exchange, 40 companies hit their 23 week high while 72 hit their 52 week low.
