Voting for the 70-member Delhi assembly ended peacefully today, with nearly 58 percent voter turnout till 5 PM. The highest poll percentage of around 64 was recorded in North East Delhi district while South East district recorded the lowest voter percentage of around 54 percent.
In Shahdara district, poll percentage of over 61 percent was recorded. Nearly 58 percent of voter turnout was registered in North Delhi and over 58 percent in North West.
Prominent leaders whose fate was sealed in the EVMs today include Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi, Manish Sisodia of the Aam Aadmi Party, and Parvesh Verma, Vijender Gupta, Arvinder Singh Lovely, and Ramesh Bidhuri of BJP. From the Congress side, Devendra Yadav, Sandeep Dixit, and Alka Lamba were the prominent faces in this election. A total of 699 candidates were in the fray.
Election Commission had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure free and fair polls in the national capital. Several arrangements and facilities were provided at polling booths to ensure hassle-free voting. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu maintained a thorough and exhaustive oversight of the elections to ensure seamless, smooth and peaceful elections. A total of 13 thousand 766 polling stations including 733 auxiliary polling stations were set up. All the polling stations were under live webcasting surveillance for strict watch on the poll proceedings. Assured minimum facilities including ramps, sufficient lighting, wheelchairs, toilets and volunteers for elderly and PwD voters were provided at all polling stations. All necessary facilities were put in place with special consideration for both slums, JJ clusters as well as urban centres. A zero-tolerance approach was adopted towards the use of money power in the elections. Enforcement agencies have made seizures worth around 236 crore rupees since the announcement of the Delhi elections on 7th January.
The counting will take place on Saturday.
Meanwhile, voting for bye-polls was also held in the Erode-East assembly seat in Tamil Nadu and Milkipur in Uttar Pradesh. Till 5 PM, over 64.02 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Erode-East and around 65.25 percent in Milkipur.
