Death Toll from Southern Ethiopia Landslides Rises to 229; Search for Survivors Continues

The death toll from two landslides in southern Ethiopia has jumped to 229 and could rise further as the search for survivors and casualties continue. Following heavy rain, a landslide buried people in Geze Gofa district in Southern Ethiopia on Sunday night, then a second one engulfed others who had gathered to help on Monday morning.

Officials said, 148 men and 81 women were among the victims. The number of deaths increased significantly when rescuers themselves became trapped. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. Seasonal rains cause such landslides in the East African country.
