Russia’s state news agency Tass quotes a Kremlin spokesman as saying that the Putin-Trump phone call has ended.
The crucial talks ended between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump on ending the Ukraine conflict. The White House has said, the highly anticipated phone call between the Presidents of Russia and the United States had begun as the Trump administration looks to persuade the Russian leader to sign off on a 30-day ceasefire proposal with Ukraine as a possible pathway to end the war.
Ahead of the call, President Trump said he is expected to discuss with President Putin the land and power plants that have been seized during the grinding three-year conflict. The White House has expressed optimism in advance that peace is within reach.
Today’s call comes after Ukrainian officials last week agreed to the American proposal during talks in Saudi Arabia led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, remains skeptical that President Putin is ready for peace as Russian forces continue to pound Ukraine.
The engagement is just the latest turn in dramatically shifting US-Russia relations.
