In Delhi, the Rouse Avenue court has asked the counsel representing Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders to furnish a bail bond on May 13, the next scheduled hearing, in connection with a case linked to a protest outside the Election Commission of India (ECI). The protest occurred in April 2024, ahead of the General Election.
Among the TMC leaders summoned by the court were MPs Derek O’Brien, Mohd Nadimul Haque, Dola Sen, Saket Gokhle, and Sagarika Ghosh, along with leaders Vivek Gupta, Arpita Ghosh, Santanu Sen, Abir Ranjan Bishwas, and Sudip Raha. However, only Vivek Gupta appeared before the court.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Neha Mittal granted exemptions from personal appearance to eight of the accused, who were represented by their counsel.
The case stems from allegations that the TMC leaders gathered and protested at the ECI despite the imposition of Section 144 of the CrPC. The protest led to the registration of an FIR against the accused.
