Once infamous for its dilapidated lakes and filth, Coimbatore has today become a role model for all the cities of the country for its lake management.
These lakes, being developed under the Smart City Mission of the Government of India, have not only enhanced the beauty of the city but have also created new centres of tourism.
The smart city mission was launched on the 25th of June 2015.
Under the Smart City Mission, they rejuvenated seven lakes by removing all the encroachments, shifting more than seven thousand people and reclaiming the 28 acres of lakefronts as public open space.
Coimbatore Municipal Corporation Commissioner M Prathap told Akashvani news that with this innovation of Smart City Mission, the level of groundwater has also increased and around 20 thousand acres of the agricultural area is getting water for irrigation.
The city has re-established its lost connections with nature and now, has showcasing its natural heritage better both for the residents and the tourists by providing water sports, boating, food courts, a 9 km long cycle track, and bird watching tower.
