Coal sector aims to ramp up renewable energy capacity to over 9GW by 2030

In line with India’s net-zero ambitions, the coal sector is aiming to ramp up renewable energy capacity to over 9GW by 2030. The sector is working in the direction of updated Nationally-Determined Contribution (NDC) target. The aim is to achieve 50 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030. The Ministry of Coal has already set an ambitious net-zero electricity consumption plan for Coal/Lignite PSUs. The Ministry is actively promoting the deployment of both rooftop solar and ground-mounted solar projects across mining facilities. Presently, leading coal companies like Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and SCCL have installed approximately 1700 MW of solar capacity. They are supplemented by an additional 51 MW from windmills. With the Net Zero electricity consumption initiative, the Ministry says, it aims to establish a gold standard for sustainable energy practices.
