Coal Movement Doubles in 2 Years, RSR Mode Eases Rail Congestion: Govt

The government today said that coal movement across the country has doubled over the last two years. The Ministry of Coal, in a statement, said that the Rail-Sea-Rail (RSR) mode coal movement has increased from 28 million metric tonnes in 2022 to 54 million metric tonnes in 2024. It said that the RSR mode had reduced congestion on the all-rail route (ARR) by providing an additional alternative mode of coal evacuation and ensured a lower carbon footprint compared to the ARR mode of coal movement.

The ministry added that, at present, the movement of domestic coal from mines has been taking place through the Rail-Sea-Rail (RSR) route to meet the demand of various power plants. The Ministry of Coal has taken initiatives to promote Rail-Sea-Rail (RSR), which aims to integrate RSR transportation for the efficient movement of coal. This multimodal system allows for seamless transportation of coal from mines to ports and to their end users while improving logistical efficiencies.
