China: 29 people remain missing after landslide hits village in Junlian County

In China, at least 29 people remain missing after a landslide struck a village in Junlian County, located in the south-western Sichuan province, yesterday. The disaster buried 10 houses and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate. The Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched hundreds of rescuers, including firefighters, to the area. According to state media, two people were pulled out alive with injuries, and approximately 200 residents were relocated.

Authorities attributed the landslide to heavy rainfall and the area’s geological conditions, while efforts continue to confirm the total number of missing. Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his concern over the incident and urged authorities to do everything possible to locate the missing and reduce casualties. To aid relief and recovery efforts, China has allocated 80 million yuan for disaster response.
