Calcutta High Court suspends death sentence of convicts in Kamduni rape and murder case

The division bench of Calcutta High Court suspended the death sentence of the convicts in the Kamduni rape and murder case. A division bench of Justice Jayamalya Bagchi and Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta ordered life imprisonment for Saiful Ali and Ansar Ali, who were sentenced to death in the lower court. Another death row convict Amin Ali was acquitted by the division bench. In addition to this, the lower court ordered life imprisonment for Emanul Islam, Aminul Islam, and Bholanath Naskar. Today, the division bench of Calcutta High Court has released the three as they have already served 10 years in jail.

On June 7, 2013, a student was raped and brutally murdered at Kamduni in North 24 Parganas on her way back from college. The CID investigated the incident. During the trial, one of the accused named Gopal Naskar died. In 2016, the lower court convicted 6 accused Saiful Ali Molla, Ansar Ali Molla, Amin Ali, Immanul Haque, Bholanath Naskar and Aminul Islam. Saiful, Ansar, and Amin were sentenced to death. The court sentenced the remaining three to life imprisonment. Two other accused Rafiq Ghazi and Noor Ali were released due to lack of evidence. The convicts filed a case in the High Court against the order of the lower court. Unhappy with the verdict, agitators have announced to move the Supreme Court against the High Court order demanding higher punishment for the convicts.
