Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026-27, giving a strong push to manufacturing, infrastructure and job creation, while proposing a simpler tax and customs regime. In her ninth consecutive Budget in Parliament, Ms Sitharaman laid out a multi-pronged strategy to sustain growth amid global uncertainty, including expanding domestic electronics and semiconductor capabilities, de-risking infrastructure projects, skilling India’s youth for emerging technologies, and easing compliance for taxpayers and importers.

Through Union Budget 2026-27, Content creation and creative industries get a boost through AVGC labs in schools and colleges, support for animation, gaming and comics, and new institutional capacity for design and hospitality. On the growth of the country’s Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) sector which requires two million professionals by the end of year 2030, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, the government will provide support to the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai in setting up AVGC Content Creator Labs in 15 thousand secondary schools and 500 colleges. The Minister also announced that a new National Institute of Design will be established to boost design education and development in the eastern region of India.

प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने वीडियो मैसेज के ज़रिए केंद्रीय बजट 2026 पर अपनी बात रखी। इस मौके पर बोलते हुए प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि यह बजट ऐतिहासिक है। प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि यह बजट अपार अवसरों का हाईवे है, जो वर्तमान के सपनों को पूरा करता है और भारत के उज्ज्वल भविष्य की नींव को मज़बूत करता है। उन्होंने इस बात पर ज़ोर दिया कि यह बजट 2047 तक विकसित राष्ट्र बनने की दिशा में भारत की ऊंची उड़ान का आधार है। श्री मोदी ने कहा कि जिस रिफॉर्म एक्सप्रेस पर भारत सवार है, उसे इस बजट से नई ऊर्जा और नई गति मिलेगी। उन्होंने इस बात पर ज़ोर दिया कि किए गए ज़बरदस्त सुधार भारत के महत्वाकांक्षी, साहसी और प्रतिभाशाली युवाओं को ऊंची उड़ान भरने के लिए खुला आसमान देते हैं।
Reiterating Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement that this is a youth power budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the provisions made in the budget will prepare leaders, innovators, and creators across different sectors.
He noted that through the establishment of medical hubs, allied health professionals, promotion of the orange economy including audio-visuals, encouragement of gaming, tourism, and the Khelo India Mission, new opportunities will open for the youth.
केंद्रीय सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्री अश्विनी वैष्णव ने केंद्रीय बजट की घोषणाओं पर मीडिया से बात करते हुए कहा, यह युवाओं की शक्ति और महिलाओं की ताकत से प्रेरित, कर्तव्य-आधारित बजट है। उन्होंने कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने WAVES के ज़रिए भारत की क्रिएटिव इकोनॉमी को ग्लोबल स्टेज पर पहुंचाया है। उन्होंने आगे कहा कि IIT और IIM की तर्ज पर स्थापित IICT मुंबई, क्रिएटर्स लैब के ज़रिए 15,000 स्कूलों और 500 कॉलेजों से जुड़ेगा, जिससे 20 लाख नई नौकरियां पैदा होंगी।
The Economic Survey also noted that India’s media and entertainment (M&E) sector has emerged as a major pillar of the services economy, covering audio-visual production, broadcasting, digital content, animation, gaming, advertising and live entertainment.

Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya today launched MY Bharat Budget Quest 2026, following the success of the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue. The nationwide youth-centric initiative, which will commence tomorrow, is aimed at enhancing the understanding of the Union Budget by the Youths of the country, making budgetary provisions more accessible, relatable and citizen-centric. It seeks to connect the Budget with the everyday lives of citizens by engaging youth from colleges, institutions and coaching centers across the country through a structured and participatory framework. Launching the initiative, the Minister said that with MY Bharat Budget Quest, the government focuses to empower young voices.
Dr Mandaviya said that the first round of the competition will be open to the youth registered on the MY Bharat portal till the 17th of this month.

Sambalpur
Kardola Village in the Sambalpur district of Odisha is a thriving hub of Sambalpuri handloom weaving, showcasing traditional ikat patterns and murals. It is a unique destination where visitors can experience live Sambalpuri saree production and witness this intricate craft. More from our Sambalpur correspondent.
Kardola Village is primarily inhabited by skilled weavers who have maintained the legacy of Sambalpuri Ikat sarees for decades. Around 40% of the villagers are weavers. In 2021, with the support of the Odisha Lalita Kala Akademy, 42 artists and weavers created 4,000 square feet of murals on village house walls, showcasing family-specific ikat designs. Visitors can immerse themselves in rural life, traditional weaving practices, and hand-painted walls that reflect the rich culture of Western Odisha.
This year, the art and craft village of Odisha is once again in the limelight for its efforts to be included in the State Silpa Grama programme as a village of the Sambalpuri handicraft industry. The State Tourism Department has sanctioned more than ₹15 crore to develop Kardola Village as a Silpa Grama. This initiative is part of the Hirakud Master Plan and the Riverfront Development Project.
Under this programme, a craft centre will be set up in the village, where local weavers will receive training from experts. A shopping complex will also be developed for selling Sambalpuri textiles. Tourists visiting Hirakud will be able to witness live weaving of Sambalpuri Ikat sarees at Kardola and purchase them directly from the weavers. Similar facilities will be developed at Singhpali Village in the Attabira Block of Bargarh District by the State Tourism Department under the Hirakud Master Plan Project. RAIPUR
छत्तीसगढ़ के नारायणपुर जिले का अबूझमाड़ इलाका जो एक समय माओवादियांं का गढ़ माना जाता था, वहां प्रशासन ने हाफ मैराथन का आयोजन किया। इस मैराथन के जरिए इलाके में शांति, सद्भाव और विकास का संदेश दिया गया।
छत्तीसगढ़ के बस्तर संभाग के अबूझमाड़ इलाके में 31 जनवरी को 21 किलोमीटर लंबी हाफ मैराथन का आयोजन किया गया। यह मैराथन नारायणपुर से शुरू होकर बासिंग में संपन्न हुई। इस मैराथन में छत्तीसगढ़ और अन्य राज्यों के दस हजार से अधिक धावकों ने भाग लिया। इनमें साठ से अधिक विदेशी प्रतिभागी भी शामिल थे।
इस मैराथन की उल्लेखनीय बात यह रही कि इसमें बीते कुछ दिनों के दौरान हथियार छोड़कर समाज की मुख्यधारा में लौटे आत्मसमर्पित माओवादियों ने भी हिस्सा लिया।
इस हाफ मैराथन का शुभारंभ करते हुए छत्तीसगढ़ के मुख्यमंत्री विष्णुदेव साय ने कहा कि इसके जरिए अबूझमाड़ की धरती से पूरे देश और दुनिया को अमन और शांति का संदेश दिया जा रहा है। मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि इस मैराथन में भाग लेने के लिए युवा वर्ग ने जो उत्साह दिखाया है, उससे स्पष्ट है कि नक्सलवाद से मुक्ति की दिशा में बढ़ रहा यह क्षेत्र जल्द ही खुशियों से आबाद होगा।

PUDUCHERRY
Depleting groundwater resources have emerged as a serious challenge across many parts of India, affecting drinking water security and sustainable development.
In this context, the international township of Auroville near Puducherry has initiated a pilot effort to explore alternative methods of drinking water generation and management. As part of this initiative, a decentralised water system that generates potable water directly from air using Atmospheric Water generation is being installed at the Auroville Visitors Centre. Named Atmosbox, this standalone system based on German technology is expected to reduce Auroville’s dependence on groundwater to a great extent. The system is a fully containerised unit powered by a 13 kilowatt solar panel and battery storage, allowing it to operate 24X7 independent of electrical grid. Each unit produces 500 litres of water daily. Beyond Atmospheric Water generation, the system can also filter upto 250 litres of water per hour from locally available water sources.
Samuel, a technical lead from Germany is overseeing the implementation of Atmosbox in Auroville. Auroville authorities informed that the project can integrate rainwater treatment and purification in the future, creating a more comprehensive water management model.
Alongside the technical deployment, the initiative has also opened up opportunities for knowledge exchange and skill development for Auroville. During his visit, Samuel interacted with members of Stem Land, a science and technology learning centre operating under Sri Aurobindo International Institute of Educational Research in Auroville. The centre focuses on training rural youth in advanced areas such as electronics, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, linking environmental solutions with human capacity building.
By experimenting with innovative technologies and involving local institutions, Auroville is attempting to demonstrate how community-led initiatives can contribute to addressing India’s growing water challenges.

He wrote novels such as Train to Pakistan (1956) and I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale (1959), several essays and short stories, and a definitive history of Sikhism in two volumes. Singh won the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, and was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, between 1980 and 1986.
