Today, we will talk about : NATIONAL VOTERS DAY.

Have you ever noticed what happens on election day in India? Tea stalls buzz a little louder. Elders discuss candidates with folded newspapers in hand. Young voters take selfies with inked fingers like it’s a badge of honour.

Addressing the National Voters’ Day programme in New Delhi, the President said that voting is not merely a political expression- it reflects the deep trust citizens place in India’s democratic and electoral process.

When someone presses that button on the EVM, what are they really choosing? A candidate? Or a party? But actually the future they want their children to grow up in? That’s why President Murmu called today’s voters the architects of tomorrow, urging every adult citizen to exercise the right to vote.

Yes and recently, India hosted the International Conference on Democracy and Election Management, attended by representatives of 42 election management bodies and delegates from several countries. What does that tell us? That when the world talks about running elections at scale, it looks towards India.

On this special occasion, President Murmu handed over Electors Photo Identity Cards to newly enrolled young voters. That moment- when a first-time voter holds their EPIC card- often brings a proud smile and a quiet sense of responsibility.

A proud moment for public broadcasting- Akashvani’s News Service Division received the Media Award in the Electronic Radio category for its outstanding voter education campaign in 2025.

National Voters’ Day is observed every year on 25th January, marking the foundation of the Election Commission of India, established in 1950, a day before India became a Republic.

The Prime Minister shared a simple yet powerful thought: When a young person becomes a voter for the first time, the entire neighbourhood- be it a village lane or a city apartment- should celebrate, congratulate them, and share sweets.

He expressed deep appreciation for everyone working at the grassroots- polling staff, volunteers, officials- who keep India’s democracy vibrant and alive. And to the youth, his message was clear- Register as a voter the moment you turn 18.

After a long and distinguished journey, Tripura emerged as a full-fledged state on January 21, 1972. Before independence, in the princely state of Tripura, after the death of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, Regent Maharani Kanchanprabha Devi decided to merge Tripura with independent India. From that decision, through various stages of history, and now having completed more than fifty years as a full-fledged state, Tripura is setting a shining example for the country in various fields.

January 21st is the day Tripura attained full statehood. Every year, on this occasion, various programs are organized across the state at all levels. Along with conferring of  two posthumas awards to deceased legendary educationist Dhirendrachandra Datta and recently expired Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly Bishwabandhu Sen, in total Sixteen prominent individuals were included in the program to receive awards and honours named as Tripura Bibhooshan, Tripura Bhooshan and several other awards for their significant contributions to the state’s progress in various fields. The current number of seats in the Tripura State assembly is 60. More than half a century ago, this number was half of that. This is because, in terms of status, Tripura was then a Union Territory, or before that, at the time of its merger with India, it was a ‘Category C’ Chief Commissioner-ruled state. The day Tripura attained full Statehood, its neighboring North Eastern States of Manipur and Meghalaya were also conferred recognition of same status. However, over this long journey of progress, through many ups and downs, conflicts, and paths to prosperity, today’s full-fledged state of Tripura is undoubtedly at the forefront, setting an example of indomitable progress for the whole of India. Michael Madhusudan Dutt  was born on this day in 1824. He was a Bengali poet and playwright. He is considered one of the pioneers of Bengali literature.. Dutt began writing English poetry aged around 17 years, sending his works to publications in England, including Blackwood’s Magazine and Bentley’s Miscellany. They were, however, never accepted for publication. This was also when he began a correspondence with his friend, Gour Das Bysack, which today forms the bulk of sources on his life. He pioneered the Bengali sonnet and introduced European-style blank verse into Bengali poetry, revolutionizing its metrical structure. Praising Dutt’s blank verse, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, observed: “As long as the Bengali race and Bengali literature would exist, the sweet lyre of Madhusudan would never cease playing.” He added: “Ordinarily, reading of poetry causes a soporific effect, but the intoxicating vigour of Madhusudan’s poems makes even a sick man sit up on his bed.” In his The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian, Nirad C. Chaudhuri has remarked that during his childhood days in Kishoreganj, a common standard for testing guests’ erudition in the Bengali language during family gatherings was to require them to recite the poetry of Dutt, without an accent.
