Infrastructure inefficiencies in the marine fisheries sector are causing the wastage of an estimated 25 to 35 million tonnes of fish globally every year. This has been revealed in a joint study by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation. The findings were presented at a two-day international workshop on Marine Fisheries Value Chain in the Bay of Bengal Region held last day in Puducherry.
Conducted during 2025-26 across 11 Asian countries including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, the study identifies systemic inefficiencies within the marine fisheries sector. According to the study report, fish loss and waste account for 20 to 35 per cent of total production in these nations, with some regions witnessing losses as high as 75 per cent. Across Asia, between 20 and 60 per cent of total catch is lost along the aquatic food value chain, turning what should be a valuable nutritional and economic resource into a silent crisis. A significant 43.5 per cent of the losses occur at landing sites themselves, largely due to inadequate icing facilities and high ambient temperatures. Presenting the findings at the workshop, the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation Director Dr. P. Krishnan pointed to infrastructure and institutional deficits across the Bay of Bengal region. He observed that the absence of adequate cold storage facilities at landing centres, insufficient ice plants, poorly integrated cold-chain logistics, and weak processing and packaging systems are among the major factors contributing to large-scale wastage. The study calls for a comprehensive upgrade of the fisheries value chain so that fishers can move from being price-takers to value-makers. It stresses the need for improved fleet management planning, modernisation of cold storage and ice production facilities at landing centres, adoption of traceability systems, introduction of on-board processing and preservation technologies, and stronger integration between fishing vessels and processing industries. Drawing lessons from countries such as Norway and Iceland, the report notes that post-harvest losses have been reduced to below five per cent in these nations through full traceability and high-value processing. It underlines that technological adoption and policy alignment are critical for achieving similar outcomes in India and other Bay of Bengal countries. कर्पूरी ठाकुर
कर्पूरी ठाकुर (अंग्रेज़ी: Karpoori Thakur, जन्म- 24 जनवरी, 1924; मृत्यु- 17 फरवरी, 1988)। भारतीय स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, शिक्षक, राजनीतिज्ञ तथा बिहार के भूतपूर्व मुख्यमंत्री थे। कर्पूरी ठाकुर इतने सरल थे कि आम लोगों की समस्याएं भी बड़ी तल्लीनता से सुनते थे। बहुत तल्लीन होकर प्रदेश का कोई भी अहम काम निपटाते थे। इसीलिए उनको जननायक भी कहा जाता है। भारत सरकार ने कर्पूरी ठाकुर को वर्ष 2024 में उनकी मृत्यु के 35 साल बाद भारत रत्न से सम्मानित किया।
कर्पूरी ठाकुर बिहार में एक बार उपमुख्यमंत्री, दो बार मुख्यमंत्री और दशकों तक विधायक और विरोधी दल के नेता रहे। 1952 की पहली विधानसभा में चुनाव जीतने के बाद वे बिहार विधानसभा का चुनाव कभी नहीं हारे।
