Today we celebrate Thai Pongal-the joyous festival of harvest, gratitude, and new beginnings. Pongal marks the arrival of the Thai month in the Tamil calendar, a month that holds deep cultural, spiritual, and social significance. In Tamil society, Thai is believed to usher in fresh opportunities and positive change. There is a beautiful Tamil proverb that says, “Thai pirandhaal vazhi pirakkum”-when Thai is born, new paths open. And that belief continues to guide Tamil life even today.This is why the Thai month is considered highly auspicious. It is a preferred time for weddings, starting new businesses, purchasing homes, and embarking on important ventures.

At the heart of the celebration is the ceremonial preparation of Pongal, the dish from which the festival takes its name. Made using newly harvested rice, fresh milk, and jaggery, Pongal is cooked outdoors, often facing the rising sun. As the milk boils over the pot, families cheerfully exclaim, “Pongalo Pongal!”-a joyful expression symbolizing abundance, prosperity, and overflowing happiness.

“Andhra Pradesh is celebrating Sankranthi with great joy and fervour. The three-day festival began the previous day with Bhogi bonfires early in the morning. Houses and streets are decorated with bright rangolis. Everyone is seen wearing new traditional clothes. Villages and towns look lively and cheerful. Rooster fights draw large crowds. Traditional games and folk dances entertain people of all ages. Special cultural events are held across the state. Temples are crowded with pilgrims offering prayers. Devotees seek blessings for a good harvest, good health and happiness. Sankranthi brings families together and fills the state with tradition, devotion and festive spirit. The World Book Fair 2026, being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, has turned into a paradise for children. Away from glowing screens, books teach children to pause, feel and dream. A report:
“In an age dominated by online reading and endless scrolling, children of all ages can be seen thronging the fair, dragging trolleys and carrying bags, ready to be filled with books. Talking to Akashvani, Daksh, a student of 6th grade, expressed his fondness for reading and books.
Leoni, a bright 5th grader, shares with happiness that she has already bought more than seven books.

महाराष्ट्र में लोकतंत्र का उत्सव यानी महानगरपालिका चुनाव के लिए मतदान जारी है। आइए, नागपुर से सुनते हैं हमारे प्रतिनिधि की रिपोर्ट।
“राज्य निर्वाचन आयोग के निर्देशानुसार महाराष्ट्र में नागपुर महानगरपालिका सहित 29 महानगरपालिकाओं के लिए सार्वत्रिक चुनाव-2026 के तहत आज सुबह 7.30 बजे से मतदान जारी है, जो शाम 5.30 बजे तक चलेगा। नागपुर शहर में 24 लाख से अधिक मतदाता अपने मताधिकार का उपयोग कर रहे हैं। दिव्यांग मतदाताओं की सुविधा के लिए मनपा द्वारा विशेष परिवहन व्यवस्था तथा व्हॉट्सऐप हेल्पलाइन शुरू की गई है। मतदान केंद्रों पर सुरक्षा के साथ-साथ आवश्यक सुविधाएँ उपलब्ध कराई गई हैं, वहीं डिजिटल प्लेटफॉर्म के माध्यम से मतदान केंद्र खोजने की सुविधा भी दी गई है। इस बीच मुख्यमंत्री देवेंद्र फडणवीस ने नागरिकों से अधिक से अधिक संख्या में मतदान करने की अपील की है. इसके अलावा, महानगरपालिका चुनाव प्रक्रिया के तहत शहर के प्रत्येक ज़ोन में एक मतदान केंद्र ऐसा है, जहाँ संपूर्ण निर्वाचन प्रक्रिया महिला कर्मचारियों द्वारा संचालित की जा रही है, जिन्हें पिंक बूथ कहा जा रहा है। साथ ही, प्रत्येक ज़ोन में एक आदर्श बूथ भी स्थापित किया गया है, जहाँ मतदाताओं के लिए सभी आवश्यक सुविधाएँ उपलब्ध कराई गई हैं। परिक्रमा के लिए, आकाशवाणी नागपुर से धनंजय वानखेडे के साथ मैं हेमांगी कुलकर्णी।”

Manipur is a land that has given birth to countless brave heroes, whose courage and sacrifices are deeply woven into its history. Among these towering figures stands Maharaja Gambhir Singh, a visionary leader and fearless warrior who played a decisive role in safeguarding the sovereignty and identity of Manipur. “In Manipur, the 192nd Death Anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh was observed across the State by different groups on last Friday. The State level observation was held at the Samadhi of the Maharaja at Langthabal in which people were led by the Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla in floral tribute to the statues of Maharaja Gambhir Singh, Meidingu Nara Singh and Sana Herachandra. A guard of honour, gun salute and sounding of the last post were accorded by a contingent of the Manipur Rifles as part of the observation. Addressing the observance, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla said that Manipur’s history, while marked by glory, also endured profound suffering during the Burmese occupation of 1819 to 1826 remembered as Seven Year Devastation or Chahi Taret Khuntakpa. He noted that the period of devastation threatened the very survival of the kingdom, but also gave rise to exceptional leadership in Maharaja Gambhir Singh whose courage and unity of purpose inspired a determined struggle for freedom. The Governor said that Maharaja Gambhir Singh’s legacy extended beyond military victory to visionary statesmanship, culminating in international recognition of Manipur’s sovereignty through the Treaty of Yandabo. He added that the state government is honouring this enduring legacy by protecting the Maharaja’s Samadhi as a historical monument and by developing Langthabal Konung Ching as a centre of heritage, learning and tourism.
Conclusion: The Death Anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh is a powerful reminder of Manipur’s proud history and the sacrifices made to protect its freedom and identity. “Although Masa Puja is a monthly ritual, it holds greater significance as Makara Maasa Puja immediately follows the Makara Vilakku festival. The hill shrine will remain open to pilgrims until the 19th of this month. On the 20th, only the Raja’s representative will be permitted to offer worship, and the temple will remain closed to pilgrims, marking the end of this year’s pilgrimage season. Homai Vyarawalla (9 December 1913 – 15 January 2012), commonly known by her pseudonym Dalda 13, was India’s first woman photojournalist. She began her career in 1938 working for the Bombay Chronicle, capturing images of daily life in the city. Vyarawalla worked for the British Information Services from the 1940s until 1970 when she retired.

आज जयंती है ज्ञानी गुरमुख सिंह मुसाफ़िर की। पंजाबी भाषा के विख्यात साहित्यकार थे। उनके द्वारा रचित एक कहानी संग्रह ‘उरवरपार’ के लिये उन्हें मरणोपरान्त सन् 1978 में ‘साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार’ से सम्मानित किया गया था। उन्हें मरणोपरांत पद्म विभूषण से भी विभूषित किया गया।

Sajjan (15 January 1921 – 17 May 2000) was a Bollywood and stage actor. He acted in several plays and movies from the 1950s to the 1980s. His best known films are Bees Saal Baad, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, April Fool, Rail Ka Dibba, Johny Mera Naam and Jhumroo. Sajan was born on January 15, 1921, He had a desire to be a lawyer not an actor. A poet by heart, Sajjan showed his talent when he wrote dialogues for Meena (1944) and lyrics for Door Chalen (1946) and Dhanyavad (1948). He also acted in small roles in Prithvi Theatre.
