Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India today is eager for progress, restless to achieve development, and determined to become self-reliant. Prime Minister Modi made the remarks while delivering the sixth Ramnath Goenka Lecture in New Delhi.
Mr Modi said, people have seen how the past 25 years of the 21st century have passed with great speed, and one challenge after another has come and yet the pace of India could not be stopped. The Prime Minister said, today, the world sees the Indian Growth Model as a model of hope.

Ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were today sentenced to death in absentia by country's International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka for alleged crimes against humanity over violent crackdown during student-led protests last year.
The three-member bench, led by Justice Mohd Golam Mortuza Majumder, also sentenced former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who turned state witness, to five years of imprisonment in the same case. More from our Dhaka correspondent:
"As a precaution, security has been sharply intensified across Dhaka, with additional units of Border Guard Bangladesh, police, the Rapid Action Battalion, and the army deployed throughout the capital. Heightened security measures have also been enforced in Sheikh Hasina’s home districts - Gopalganj, Madaripur, and Faridpur - amid concerns of potential unrest. Analysts say the verdict could significantly alter Bangladesh’s political landscape. With national elections approaching, the death sentence handed to a former prime minister and her close aide has raised the political stakes and may further deepen divisions. The 78-year old politician who was tried in her absence and currently living in exile has called the court's decision biased and politically motivated in a statement released after the verdict. She said the verdict was a foregone conclusion handed down by an unelected government with no democratic mandate. Talking to media, Ms Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed expressed outrage over the verdict.

Ministry of External Affairs has said that India, as a close neighbour remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country. In a statement, the Ministry said that India has noted the verdict announced by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Ministry said, India will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to ensure peace and democracy in the neighbouring nation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the 32nd meeting of Northern Zonal Council (NZC) at Faridabad in Haryana today. The Northern Zonal Council comprises the states and Union Territories of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Chandigarh.
At the beginning of the meeting, tributes were paid to those who lost their lives in the recent car bomb blast in Delhi and the explosion at Nowgam Police Station in Jammu and Kashmir. During the meeting, the Home Minister said, eliminating terrorism from its roots is government's collective commitment. He said that in the culprits of the Delhi bomb blast will be traced even from the netherworld, brought before the country’s judicial system, and given the strictest possible punishment.
Mr Shah said that strong states create a strong nation, and Zonal Councils play a very important role in translating this into reality on the ground.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested another key associate of the terrorist involved in the Red Fort area car blast case. Jasir Bilal Wani, a Kashmiri resident was arrested from Srinagar. According to the agency, Wani allegedly provided technical support for carrying out the terror attack, which claimed 10 innocent lives and left around 25 injured. The NIA revealed that Wani modified drones and attempted to make rockets ahead of the blast. It added that Wani is an active co-conspirator of the attack and worked closely with terrorist Umar Nabi to plan the terror carnage.

Electronics and Information Technology Ministry announced the 2nd tranche of Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme in New Delhi today. Under the 2nd Tranche, 17 applications have been approved with an outlay of over seven thousand crore rupees.
On the occasion, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw handed over the approval letter to the representatives of the companies.
Briefing the media, Mr Vaishnaw said, these 17 projects will generate production of worth 60 thousand crore rupees and over 11 thousand jobs.

The Election Commission has ordered a special revision of electoral rolls in Assam. 1st of January, 2026 will be the qualifying date for the state to carry out the Special Revision. In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, the Commission said, the date of publication of integrated draft electoral roll will be 27th of next month. While the period for filing claims and objections will be between 27th December to 22nd January, 2026. The date of final publication of the electoral roll will be 10th February, 2026. The Commission said, the Electoral Registration Officer of each Assembly Constituency will be responsible for ensuring that no eligible citizen is left out while at the same time no ineligible person is included in the Electoral Roll.

In Bihar, the BJP legislative party will meet tomorrow at the state headquarters in Patna, where the newly elected 89 MLAs will choose their new leader. Bihar BJP President Dr. Dilip Jaiswal said party observers will also attend the meeting.
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a thumping majority in the Bihar Assembly Polls, winning 202 seats in the 243-member House. More from our correspondent:

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the death of 42 Indian Umrah pilgrims, in a bus-tanker collision in Saudi Arabia. The passenger bus was carrying the Indian pilgrims, mostly from state of Telangana, from Mecca to Madinah when the mishap occurred this morning. Indian Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are providing all possible assistance to the affected families.
Meanwhile, the Telangana Cabinet today announced an ex-gratia of 5 lakh rupees each for the families of the Umrah pilgrims from the state who lost their lives in the accident. More from our Correspondent:
"The grief-stricken families thronged the Haj House in Nampally in Hyderabad to know more details about their dear ones. As many as 18 members of the same family, including several children, who were on the Umrah pilgrimage were killed in the accident. A similar tragedy occurred to another family. Sabiha Begum and her four other family members were also among the victims. Now the Telangana State Government is making arrangements for sending two members of each of the victims to Saudi Arabia for performing the last rites of the mortal remains of the deceased. The state Cabinet also decided to deploy a government team led by state Minority Welfare Minister Mohd Azharuddin to Saudi Arabia. Lakshmi Akashvani News, Hyderabad."

The Government has announced 26 percent increase in rates for advertisements in Print Media. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in a statement said that media rates for print media per square centimetre for one lakh copies of dailies in the black and white advertisement have been enhanced from 47 rupees 40 paise to 59 rupees 68 paise. The government had constituted the 9th Rate Structure Committee in 2021 for making recommendations regarding revision in rates for Government advertisements in print media.
