India summons Sri Lankan Envoy to register protest over death of Indian Fisherman in north of Katchatheevu Island

India today summoned Sri Lankan Envoy over the death of one Indian Fisherman after a Sri Lankan Naval Vessel collided with an Indian fishing vessel.

 

Ministry of External Affairs said, the Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in New Delhi was called this morning to the Ministry of External Affairs and a strong protest was registered over the incident.

 

India expressed shock and anguish at the unfortunate loss of life. The Ministry said, the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo will also raise the matter with the Sri Lankan government later today.

 

The MEA said, Government of India has always emphasized the need to deal with issues pertaining to fishermen in a humane and humanitarian manner and existing understandings between the two Governments in that regard must be strictly observed.

 

It said, utmost efforts should be made to ensure that there is no recurrence or resort to the use of force.

 

MEA said,Government attaches the highest priority to the safety and security of Indian fishermen. It said, issues relating to Indian fishermen have been raised regularly at the highest levels with the Sri Lankan leadership.

 

A collision was reported early this morning between a Sri Lankan naval vessel and an Indian fishing boat close to Delft island.

 

Out of the four Indian fishermen who were on board the vessel, one unfortunately lost his life while two other fishermen have been rescued and brought ashore.

 

Another fisherman has been reported to be missing and efforts are underway to locate the missing fisherman. Meanwhile, the Indian Consulate Officials are in touch with the Sri Lankan authorities.
