Bihar: Roti Bank providing cooked food to underprivileged for 7 years

In Bihar, a unique initiative known as the Roti Bank is being run by a group of professionals, local businessmen, and youths voluntarily in Chapra, located in Saran district. The Roti Bank provides cooked food to the poor, daily wage earners, pavement dwellers, and underprivileged individuals in the community. Inspired by a namesake organization in Varanasi, this Roti Bank in Bihar has been providing uninterrupted service for its seventh year.

Akashvani’s Correspondent reports the organization has several feathers in its hat and it shot into the limelight when actor Amitabh Bachchan invited the group to his famous quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati. The chief of the Roti Bank Ravishankar Upadhyaya is a teacher by profession. Talking to Akashvani News he said now the Roti Bank is a time-tested organization which served during the Covid pandemic for migrant workers.

During the Covid period, more and more people came forward to help our cause for humanity. They helped us whether it was dry ration or water during the standstill of lockdown. We were able to work for migratory people.

Another volunteer and former treasurer Satyendra Kumar is also a teacher in Motihari, he says people contribute to the noble mission as per their capacity and devotion.

Sometimes people sponsor Puri-Bundiya and relish food on auspicious occasions and we welcome it. It helps us to amalgamate some variety into the menu we serve.

Although the footprints of Roti Bank, Chapra are spread over a small area, the steps taken are very great.
