In Bihar, at least 28 people were killed and more than five injured in rain-related incidents and lightning across Nalanda, Jehanabad, Muzaffarpur, Araria, and Begusarai districts today.
Nalanda reported the highest casualties, with 18 deaths, while nine people died and five others were injured at a temple in Bihar Sharif when a wall collapsed. Casualties were also reported in Islampur, Silao, Rahui, and Giriyak blocks. Several parts of the state were lashed by sudden rains accompanied by gusty winds this evening. Our Patna correspondent, quoting official sources, reports that 42 people have died so far in the last 24 hours due to lightning and rain-related incidents in the state.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed grief over the loss of lives. The Chief Minister also announced an ex-gratia of four lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
The Met Department has issued a 48-hour warning for more rain and thunderstorms.
