Bhoto jatra in Nepal ends

With the celebration of Bhoto jatra in Patan, the longest jatra in Nepal ends. Bhoto Jatra is a public holiday in Kathmandu Valley as people from across the valley arrive in Patan to participate in the celebration. It is a part of the month-long chariot procession of Rato Machhindranath Jatra.

Rato Machchindranath Jatra in Patan District of Kathmandu Valley starts with the creation of a wood chariot which is made without using any iron nail. A 60 ft tall spire of bamboo and tree branches decorated with flags and buntings is erected over the chariot. The Jatra originates at Pulchowk and the procession ends at Jawalakhel. On the last day of Rato Machchindranath Jatra, Bhoto Jatra is organised in which a bejewelled Nepali vest called bhoto of Rato Machindranath is displayed to the public as per tradition.  Bhoto Jatra relates the incident of finding the real owner of a divine vest that was gifted to a farmer by a serpent king.  Rato Machchindranath is worshipped by the devotees and they offer eggs, savoury delicacies, fruits and flowers to the deity. People play music from traditional Nepali instruments and dance to the tune in groups. This festival is the symbol of rain and fertility in Kathmandu Valley. The Head of State President Ram Chandra Paudel, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Chief Justice Bishwombhar Prasad Shrestha, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, and National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal, among other dignitaries, witnessed the display of the bhoto.
