The 111th anniversary of the Indian film industry was celebrated in Bangladesh with the opening of a rich and informative exhibition on the theme of ‘Journey of Indian Cinema’ at the Indian Culture Centre, Dhaka. The High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pranay Verma inaugurated the exhibition organized by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, High Commission India in Dhaka.
Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner said that the Indian film industry is considered to have started with the release of the silent film “Raja Harishchandra” on May 21, 1913, making 2025 the 111th year. This anniversary is a time to recognise the rich heritage and evolution of Indian cinema, including its diverse regional film industries, iconic actors, directors, and memorable movies, Verma said.
The High Commissioner also called upon the people of Bangladesh involved in the entertainment industry to take part in the forthcoming WAVES-World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit being held in Mumbai from 1-4 May 2025.
A discussion was held on the occasion to commemorate the contributions of various legendary film personalities in the evolution of Indian cinema and its different stages and milestones.
On the occasion, a screening of the acclaimed documentary film ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ was arranged at the venue. The documentary is about the bond that develops between a couple and an orphaned baby elephant, Raghu, who was entrusted to their care. A number of film personalities, art enthusiasts, and students from the filmmaking institutions were present on the occasion.
