Bangladesh: Dhaka police file 11 cases against BNP leaders & activists over violent events

In Bangladesh, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today filed at least 11 cases against Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders and activists with different police stations. The DMP Spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Faruk Hossain said that the cases were filed over the violent events that unfolded around the BNP's sit-in programme on Saturday at major entry points of Dhaka.

The Police official said that names of 469 people were mentioned in the cases and out of that  149 BNP activists have been arrested. The DMP official added that more cases would be filed in this regard.

Akashvani correspondent reports, Bangladesh Nationalist Party and some other parties have launched a nationwide programme earlier this month with their one point demand. The demand of the BNP led coalition is the resignation of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government before the national election. BNP wants a party neutral election time government to conduct free and fair elections. However, the current government is not in the mood to bow down against the pressure of the opposition parties citing the Constitution. This deadlock brought both parties on the streets of Bangladesh.
