Jonny Bairstow missed out on a ton, hitting an unbeaten 99 runs, as England took a lead of 275 runs. Zak Crawley hit 189 runs on Day 2 while Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Ben Stokes made 50s.
Josh Hazlewood bagged a five-wicket haul for Australia, and Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green took two wickets each.
