At least eight people killed due to floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir

In Jammu and Kashmir, at least eight people were killed due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in the upper reaches of Kathua district of Jammu division. Two residential houses collapsed due to heavy rainfall in the Bani area of Kathua district. Four bodies have been recovered, while a massive rescue and search operation is underway to locate the missing others. Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded across Jammu and Kashmir today.
 
Akashvani correspondent reports that five people of a family were buried alive when a heavy landslide falls on a house at village Surjan of Bani tehsil about 250 km from Kathua headquarters. Soon after the incident, locals aided the police in launching a rescue operation. In a separate incident, a woman died after coming under a landslide in the Bani area of the district. In another incident, a class 7th student of Sitti Tehsil was buried under a landslide in Bani, while another person also got buried under a landslide and later his body was also retrieved. Due to heavy downpour, the water level has increased significantly in rivers and streams across the Jammu division.

The administration has closed Schools in Kishtwar, Doda, Rajouri and hilly belt of Kathua district due to inclement weather. Meanwhile,  The authorities also suspended Yatra to Vaishno Devi and Amarnath Shrines due to inclement weather. The MeT department has said that intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershower was likely at many places in Jammu and at scattered places of Kashmir till July 23.

MeT officials said that heavy to very heavy rain is possible at some places of the Jammu region during this week. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the loss of lives in house collapse and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Bani area of Kathua district. He has directed the district administration to provide all possible aid to the bereaved families, who have lost their near and dear ones as well as medical assistance to the injured.

Meanwhile, the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway (NH1A) has been rendered impassable as a bridge on the Tarnah Nallah in Kathua district has suffered damage due to heavy rains. The authorities have diverted the traffic through the border road. The strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH44) which was closed for vehicular traffic in the wee hours today amid landslides in Ramban district, was partially restored for traffic in the afternoon. However, the Mughal road, the alternate highway connecting twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu division with the Shopian district of Kashmir division has been closed due to multiple landslides.
