The Assistant High Commission of India in Kandy has completed 100 years of its existence. Commemorating the occasion, the diplomatic office marked the beginning of the centenary celebrations which will be held from today. The office was created in 1923 as the office of the agent of Government of India for the benefit of the Indian Origin Tamils who work in the Sri Lankan tea plantations. Notably former President V V Giri had served as the head of the post in 1947 before getting posted as the first High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka.
On the occasion, the Assistant High Commissioner Dr. Athira S unveiled the plaque for the centenary celebrations. In addition, the families of the staff and officials of the mission performed cultural activities. The Assistant High Commission of India has been closely associated with providing necessary support for issue of OCI cards in addition to the consular assistance and implementation of various developmental projects in the region helping the Indian Origin Tamils. The office covers seven districts across four provinces in the island nation. Notably this year also marks the 200 years since the Indian Origin Tamils were first brought to Sri Lanka to work on the plantations.
