The Centre today informed that there are 3698 centrally protected monuments and sites under the care and maintenance of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed that ASI undertakes conservation, restoration, maintenance and development works of ancient monuments and archaeological sites. He said as per the National Policy for Conservation and provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act, 1958.
