ASHA workers’ protest in Kerala enters 40th day

In Kerala, the protest by ASHA workers in Thiruvananthapuram has entered its 40th day today. As part of the next phase of the protest, the hunger strike continues for the second consecutive day. The primary demand of the ASHA workers is an increase in their honorarium. Leaders from various political parties including Congress and BJP have been visiting the protest site to express their support.

The matter is being raised in Parliament and the State Assembly session. Today the Congress-led opposition, staged a walkout in the Kerala assembly, protesting against the State government’s stance on the strike by ASHA workers. Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan raised the issue of ASHA workers in the assembly through a submission. In response, State Minister M.B. Rajesh stated that the State government has a sympathetic approach to the strike. He also mentioned that the LDF government has consistently increased incentives for ASHA workers. He further added that a permanent solution can only be achieved if the central government agrees to recognize ASHA workers as healthcare professionals.

Meanwhile State Health Minister Veena George has urged the protesters to call off the strike, assuring that their demands would be considered. During the minister’s recent visit to Delhi, the minister had said that she would discuss the issue with Union Minister J. P. Nadda, but the meeting did not take place.
