In Bangladesh, there was total anarchy in the Jatrabari and Demra area of Dhaka on Monday over students’ violent clashes. More than 50 people including students were injured during violent chases and counter chases among the students of three colleges involving Kabi Nazrul College, Suhrawardy College and Dr Mahbubur Rahman Molla College in Dhaka.
Six platoons of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) have been deployed in the affected areas of Dhaka in addition to other law enforcement agencies including police, confirmed Md Shariful Islam, Public Relations Officer at BGB headquarters.
Different hospital sources and media reports said the injured students, including eight in critical condition, were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and adjacent hospitals.
Moreover, a case has been filed against 8,000 students of 37 different colleges in connection with the vandalism at National Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka, said Saiful Islam, incharge police officer.
The intelligence failure and delayed response from the security agencies raised questions about preparedness and a lack of preventive measures despite escalating tensions all around the city amid various protests.
Student leader turned Bangladesh’s Interim Government Youth and Sports adviser Asif Mahmud said on Monday that despite repeated appeals for resolution through dialogue, clashes among students could not be prevented.
“Had the law enforcement agencies acted against them, it could have led to violence and casualties. It is regrettable to witness such condemnable acts like clashes at a time when we should be building the nation together,” Mahmud wrote in a Facebook post.
