Home Minister Amit Shah has said that an early warning of heavy rainfall and landslides in Wayanad was given to the Kerala government on the 23rd of this month and again on the 24th and 25th of July. Intervening in the calling attention motion in Rajya Sabha today on the devastation in Wayanad, Mr Shah said, on the 26th again, a warning was given that there is a chance of heavy rainfall of more than 20 centimetres, landslides, and mudflow and people could lose lives in it. He said nine NDRF teams were sent to Kerala in advance, but the Kerala government did not evacuate people in time. The Home Minister said Wayanad losses could have been minimised had the Kerala government become alert following the arrival of NDRF teams. Mr Shah said India is among four countries that can provide warnings on natural disasters at least seven days in advance. He said earlier, several states, including Odisha and Gujarat, used the Centre’s early warning system to limit damages. The Home Minister said the Narendra Modi government is standing like a rock with the Kerala government and the people to deal with the Wayanad tragedy.
