Almost 88 percent of Rs 2,000 banknotes have been received back from circulation: RBI

The Reserve Bank of India has informed that almost 88 percent of the two thousand rupee banknotes have been received back from circulation. In a press release issued from Mumbai on Tuesday, RBI said that the total value of two thousand rupee banknotes received back from circulation till 31st July 2023 stands at 3.14 lakh crore rupees. Consequently, the two thousand rupee banknotes still in circulation amount to 0.42 lakh crore rupees. It may be recalled that the Reserve Bank had announced the withdrawal of two thousand rupee banknotes from circulation on 19th May 2023.
 
RBI today further informed that out of the total banknotes received back from circulation, about 87 percent were in the form of deposits while the remaining around 13 percent had been exchanged into other denomination banknotes.
 
RBI has requested members of the public to either deposit or exchange the two thousand rupee banknotes held with them over the next two months as the last date for the same remains 30th September 2023.
