All party delegation from Tamilnadu in New Delhi to meet Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to discuss Cauvery water sharing issue

An all-party delegation from Tamilnadu led by Water Resources Minister Durai Murugan is in New Delhi to meet Union water resources minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to discuss the Cauvery water sharing issue. The governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been locked in a protracted tussle over the sharing of Cauvery waters. The river is seen as a major source of sustenance for the people in either state.

The delegation will present a memorandum to the Union Minister seeking his intervention in ensuring 5000 cusecs of water release from Karnataka till 28th of this month as per the direction of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee. Earlier this week, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K.Shivakumar had met the Union Water Resources Minister and submitted a memorandum. The memorandum stated that the State was facing a drought-like situation and could not release more water. The Centre had formed the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) on June 2, 1990, to adjudicate disputes between Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry with respect to their individual water-sharing capacities.
